Robert Twigger, poet, aikidoka and travel author, was in search of a new way to journey up England when he stumbled across the Great North Line. From Christchurch to Lindisfarne, this north-south straight line goes through more than thirty ancient sites including Old Sarum, Stonehenge and Avebury. Walking on his own and in company, through Birmingham, Halifax and Consett as well as across Salisbury Plain, the Peak district, and the Yorkshire moors, Twigger becomes ever more alert to the incongruities of England's edgelands.
