We are thrilled to introduce you to hard edge artist Curtains (otherwise known as Justin).
To get to know him a little better, here are some very serious and important questions!
Why Curtains?
"Why Curtains...it goes back to 1985 when I was 15 years old, me and a friend went to the skatepark in Brighton climbed on top of the big vert ramp and my friend introduced me to his big brother as Justin.
Taking one look at my hair he said 'oi oi Curtains' and then turned round and said to everyone on the ramp 'this is Curtains.'
The nickname stuck through my many years of skateboarding and beyond, so used it as my artist name.
Describe your studio environment in 3 words.
Messy organised chaos
What is your prized possession?
The memories of a life lived
What can we expect to see from you in the near future?
More paintings and more outside paintings
What is an unwritten rule when it comes to your work?
Make sure the paint's dry before you touch it!
What is currently on your easel?
I currently have a blank canvas on my workbench...
What is your go-to studio snack?
All round snack of choice would be crisps...Wotsits, Frazzles, cheese and onion...
I love all of them but when I eat them I usually have two English Bull Terriors serving me with a food tax demand!
Jaffa Cakes-biscuit or cake?
It’s a cake when it’s not being a biscuit
Which of your own artworks is your favourite to date, and why?
I was asked if I wanted to paint some boarding round a building site with lots of other artists. It was my first large outside spray painting. I didn’t know if I could do it or what I was going to paint.
Rain, wind and flaky plywood were obstacles I had to overcome.
Getting instant feedback from people walking past or standing watching me paint was amazing and always positive.
When I finished I felt a huge sense of achievement.
What would your last ever meal on earth be?
What is on your Bucket list?
See the Northern lights, swim with sharks, go to New York with my wife, see a Bigfoot and meet an alien.
What is your favourite subject matter to paint and why?
Colours and shapes because of the freedom to create something original. Reacting and painting in the moment.
What is the most useless fact you know?
The filling in Jaffa cakes is orange flavoured apricot.
What is the funniest joke you know off the top of your head?
Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are fighting...
They lock Lightsabers and Darth Vader leans in and says "I know what you have for Christmas Luke"
Luke pushes Darth Vader away and they continue fighting.
They lock Lightsabers again and Darth Vader leans in again and says "I really do know what you have for Christmas"
Luke says "How do you know what I have for Christmas?!"
Darth Vader says "I felt your presence."
The world would be a better place with more…?
Laughter kindness and more dog owners picking up dog poo!
What quote is most likely to appear on your gravestone?
Where ever you go, that’s where you’ll be.
